PETROLEUM.

Rumors were current in town yesterday that large quantities of oil were being obtained at the Taranaki Petroleum Co.'s So. 2 well. Inquiries elicited the information that operations had been suspended at the wells for fifteen days, during the holidays, and that upon reopening on Monday the bore was found to contain petroleum. The pump was lowered, and by mid-day yesterday forty barrels had been drawn off without exhausting the supply. No further authentic information was obtainable. One large shareholder, ;who claimed to have "inside" knowledge, informed a "News" reporter that the depth of the oil iu the ibore was practically unaltered by the pumping, but this statement lacks official confirmation.
