Tlie Cht'ss ('ongress was opened this morning by Judge Denniston, who m the name of Dominion players welcomed the visitors. There are nine competitors. Amongst the visitors is R. Hay, of Melbourne, an ex-champion.

Dunedin, Last Night. The first round of the chess championship tournament resulted as follows: Edwards v. Dodds (Zukertort's opening): Edwards sacrificed bishop for two pawns on nineteenth move, and gradually forced his opponent to resign on the fiftieth move. Clrierson v. Forsyth (Crecos counter gambit): The players could not make any headway against each other, and a draw was agreed upon at the thirty-sixth move. Mason v. Kelling (Zukertort's opening): No material advantage has as yet been gained on either side. The game was unfinished and adjourned till Wednesday night, evening play being assigned to the second round. Barnes v. Davles (Buy Lopiz): Indications point to a draw.
