IMMIGRANTS.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Tlie steamer Wakanui arrived this evening from London via Capetown, having 430 third-class immigrant passengers aboard for various parts of New Zealand, a large percentage being females. The number for Auckland is 100, Wellington S)2, Lyttelton 80, New Plymouth 33, with lesser numbers for Nelson, Port Chalmers, Napier, Taunenga, Gisborne, Westport and otlier places. Tlie newcomers are of promising appearance. During the voyage, twins were born to Mrs. Lingham, and a sou to Mrs. Smith. The trip was made very pleasant with games, sporting events, concerts, dancing, etc., ami Christmas was loyally celebrated at sea. The male immigrant's are principally composed of farm hands and tradesmen.

| Wellington, 'Monday. The recent tightness of money does not seem to be calling forth many complaints from Wellington trades-people. They say that tlie Christmas lurnover was satisfactory, but. remark that the demand was principally for smaller articles. There was very little extravagant expenditure, but outlav in reasonable seasonable luxuries for home consumption, or for the benefit. of friends and relatives was apparently sullifient j to well please many shopkeepers. I People had money, but were more cautious than usual in its allocation. I
