AMUSEMENTS FOR THE HOLIDAYS.
JtJiYV rLiiIUUTH ARRANGEMENTS. New l'lywoulh, per medium of tiie Seaside Improvement Committee, a numerically small but enthusiastic group of workers, is this year making noteworthy ellorts to amuse visitors and townspeople during the Christmas and New tear holidays. The main object the committee has in view is to popularise tile splendid sea beach along the harbor, and induce viators to avail themselves oi the unequalled facilitiia tor camping out."' To that end the committee uas secured control of the moat desirable portions of the beach, and already had made arrangements for the accommodation of campers. On Saturday the first canvas dwelling was erected, and will be followed by a number of others this week. The locale of the camping ground ib a splendid one, wellsheltered and watered, commanding an "excellent view of the beach and harbor. The committee lias had sanitary tuii- - yenieucea erected, and during the week will also have a large marquee for cooking purposes, if required, placed in position. The camp should be a splendid success, and the small beginning of this year will withbut doubt, before long witness the realisation of the committee's hopes, the recognition of New Plymouth as the premier watering place on the West Coast.: Ia connection with the amusements . promoted by the committee, the most important is undoubtedly the seaside picnic on New Year's Day. Special trains will be tunning from the inland _ towns and an enormous crowd of country visitors is anticipated. The great attractions will, of course, be the warship and the training ship Amoicura, both of which will lie open for inspect lion. The committee is providing hot water, tea, sugar and milk to visiting picnickers. The Amokura will arrive hi port early on the morning of 31st December, and the boys will probably be taken for a drive round the district during the day. The movements of the warship ATe not yet definitely known, .> but in addition to the programme already arranged, the officers will probably be taken for a drive to the mountain.
' The principal entertainment subsefluenE to Utß wrship's arrival is the grand. garden party in the Kecrcation Sports .Ground on January 2nd. A Capital programme has been arranged, in which in "all probability the sailors will take part. On Wwlnesday evening, 30th December, a unique open-air concert and athletic programme under electric light has been arranged, and should attract a record attendance. The cycle-Taces, exhibitions of tight-rope walking, gymnastics. etc., embrace alone a programui 1 well worth watching. The Garrison Band has been, engaged for all the Seaside improvement Committee's func- < Cons.
* On the whole, the local public and visitors should have little reason to complain of the arrangements made for their amusement during the festive seaeon. -
