Wellington, Last Night. ,'Hhe value of the imports into Nun Zealand during the September quarter was £5,100,071, compared with £4,820,!)53 for the corresponding quarter of 1007. Exports during last quarter were valued at £2,884,290, compared with £3,251,452 for the .September quarter of 11107. FREE BOOKS FOR SCHOOLCHILDREN. Wellington, Last Night. The Wellington Education Board today passed a resolution thanking the Education Department for its action in providing free boow) for scholars in the lower classes, but point'ng out that in the opinion of the Board the amount allocated would be insufficient. The Board's inspectors are to report on the matter.
SHOW AT TIM ABU. Timaru, Last Night. The annual show at Timaru was highly successful 011 both days, hi most of the classes the prizes went, to local exhibitors. 111 sheep a 'fair number went north and south, and the most important in horses went to Ashburton and Oaniaru. Features of tile contests were those for hunters, in. which some exceptionally line form was seen. The judges highly praised the light horse elasses, and .Mr, Masaey, M.P., who was the society's guest to-day, said he had nev.T seen a better class of roadster and harness horses. The Japanese cabin-boy Riindo, who deserted from the Jlortlake, was convicted of desertion to-day. lie was handed oyer to the local agent of the .Moi'tlake, Avho will send him by the Moeraki to-day to Sydney to join his vessel there.
