He replied that it would he im- , possible to ignore a place like Feilding with its magnificent back country, and he felt sure the traffic would justify the arrangement. Palnierston N., Wednesday. A deputation representing the local [ Chamber of Commerce and the Jfanawatu A. and P. Association waited on the Premier to-day with several requests. It was requested that the Post Office should be elevated ia status to a Chief Post Office; Mia't the telephone service, with the surrounding centres, should be extended; that freight rates on the Manawatu railway when the Government assumed control should remain as at present and that a bond should be established at Palmcrston. The lirst request, tile Premier mid, was impossible to grant. The Post OiTnee already possesses all the < advantages of a Chief Post Office. To grant all the. telephone requests now made would cost about £7,000,000 and the present service with Wellington ■ could be improved. As to the rates , ! on tihe. Manawatu railway, be indicated' ! that there was not much likelihood of - tile present fighting rates being main--1 tamed, but lie said there was a proba- ; brlity that the competition of sea traf- - fie to Foxton would have to be consid--1 cred. To expend large sums of money 1 on improving the facilities for travel - Ibctween Wellington and Palmcrston and maintain the present rates savored of 1 burning fflie candle at both ends, e The Premier left by the mid-day train f for Wellington.
