GROUNDING OF THE KAI'ANUI. ssy Telegraph.- 1 -Press Association. Auckland, Wednesday. A nautical inquiry was held this morning into the grounding of the Kafkiinu at ilaiigutrai, 011 .the voyage from Auckland to U'liangarei. Tlie vessel \\;ib litlK'n uillea uiit ot ljer course. The stranding was due to fliis gross carelessness, incompetence and indiU'ercnce in not making certain of his position. Tile Court suspended his eertilicate for two years and ordered him to pay the costs of the inquiry. The Court expressed Ihe opinioil that coastal boats should carry reliable clocks and prirperly adjusted compasses similar to those required for the Home trade vessels.
TRAFALGAR DAY. Invcrcargill, Last Night. Trafalgar Day was celebrated quietly and in the rain. In the afternoon there was an excellent parade of public school r.ulets, and in the evening the Navy League held its annual meeting and gave a ball, which many people attended. 1 - Christclnircli, Last Night. Trafalgar Day was celebrated in Christchurch by the Hying of flags, decoration of the Queen's statue in Victoria Square, and by a commemorative function, held under the auspices of the Navy League, in the King Edward Barracks to-night. Wellington, Last Night. Bunting was flown on many buildings to-dav and tllie flag was saluted at the schools in honor of Trafalgar Day. The local .branch of tile Navy League held a concert this evening.
i AN APPEAL UPHELD. Dunedin, Last Night. Mr. Justice Williams has given judgment in an appeal by the Bay TJoiwn Board against the decision of Mr. Widdowson, S.M. The Board sued David Luke for half the cost of kcrbing and (.Ihannelling, but the Magistrate held that the Board was not properly constituted and siou-suited plaintiffs. At fhe original hearing it was shown that an election took place, members continuing in office till May, 1907, though aware sonic months before that the election should bo held. His Honor held Mint the Board continued in office in good faith and the non-suit was set aside.

The following motion will be discussed by the Christchureli Dibcesan Synod On Friday:—"That tdie Synod deplores tin; large increase in the number of convictions for drunkenness in the Dominion during the year; that the Synod fully realises that drunkenness and its attendant evils have decreased in noJicense districts; that the Synods recommends no-license as the only available remedy at tllie present time for the grave and increasing evils of intemperance."
