FEDERATION OF SOUTH AFRICA

"ONE STATE, ONE GOVERNMENT, ONE PEOPLE."

Received .10,' 9.35 p.m. Durban, October IBV The Government gave a banquet ftfc Durban in honor of the visit ol theBritish squadron. The speeches chiefly referred to spirit of hopefulness of South African unity. Mr. J. C. Smuts, Colonial Secretary for the Transvaal, appealed to the public to banish the suspicion, that the oottvention was either hostile to Natal » to the British throughout South Africa. On the contrary, the delegates were trying to obtain a basis for perfect equality and justice and to secure an enduring non-racial settlement. Although peace between the British and tlie Boers w*B concluded at Verecniging, yet until a. further and larger step had been takott there remained a certain *'f disunion and discord. The convention* he trusted, would perfect the work begun at Vereeniging, otherwise Stato bickerings might e trangle South Africa's future. The people must make sacrifices to secure, the high ideal of "one State, one Government, one people."
