A young man mimed Leonard Hamilton Hay appeared on remand to-day charged with the theft of jewellery of the value of £OS on 28th April from tile house of Emma Jane Best, Kodcliff. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.As a sequel to the evidence in an affiliation ease heard at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, a man named John | Pearson was charged before Mr. V. 0. Day, S.M., this mornihg with attempting to perform an illegal operation. The accused was remanded till Friday, bail being fixed in £2OO aud one surety of £2OO. At the Rangiora Magistrate's Court yesterday a man named William Ball pleaded . guilty to breaking, entering, and theft at West Eyreton, and was commuted to the Supreme Court for sentence. On a charge of stealing a horse at Oxford he was committed for trial. Invcrcargill, Last Night, John Affleck was charged to-day with permitting drunkenfiess on liis licensed premises at Wallacetown, seven miles out of town. The defence was that tin. alleged drunken man, Henry Poweil, owner of the hotel, and a former licensee, was not drunk, but, being an old man, had collapsed in the hotel bar owing to a sudden fit of weakness. Judgment was reserved.
