HIGH COMMISSIONERSHIP.
STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER. By Telegraph.T-Presa Association. Wellington, Last Night* After the Cabinet meeting to-day, the Prime Minister, replying to questions regarding the various rumors concerning Mr. W. P. Reeves' successor, said: "You mny give an emphatic denial to the statement that 1 intend to take the High Comniissionei'shi]). I have not tho slightest intention to go to London. The reason why X stated in the House on Friday that the new appointment cannot be made till October, after receipt of tho resignation, is that tho appointment is made by warrant under statute law, and the Government has no power to issue a fresh warrant until the expiry of the old one. I am not responsible for tho rumors, but I may say that the matter of Mr. Reeves' successor has not been discussed by Cabinet since his cablegram was received, not will the Cabinet discuss the question for .soino time to come"
Amongst the rumored candidates are Mr. Hall-Jones, who, it is stated, has definitely decided to resign Ministerial rank after the elections, but who is said to be unwilling to go to London; Mr. T. Mackenzie, whose seat has been wiped out by tho Boundaries Commissioners, and who was Trade Commissioner ! n London for three yoars; and Messrs. Donne and Trcgear.
