THE UNEMPLOYED.
POSITION IN CHRISTCHUROH, By Telegraph—Press Association. Ctiristchurch, Last Night. Mr. Hugger, of the local Labor Bureau, in conversation with a Truth reporter, stated that during the last fortnight the Department had found employment for over 100 men at Broken River, 39 being sent out there on Saturday. A number of the applicants, he said, were casual farm laborers, who had been unable to obtain work in the country.
Up to date tho City Council has given work to some forty or fifty applicants, and there were only a few desultory callers to-day. A man who has for the last few days been working on the river banks called on the city surveyor this morning, and informed him that lie had relinquished the pick and shovel as ho had just received news from England that a legacy of £2OOO had beeu left to him. He thanked the Council for finding liim work.
PLENTY OF WORK. Wellington, Monday. Speaking to a Press representative, the Jlon. \V. Hall-Jones said Hie .could find work (or hundreds of men on Government co-operative works. In view of that fact he could not see why men who were physically capable of work should stay in the towns, as they did in Christcimreh, and, go round with ;■ cart to collect food. As to the wajM earned, the Minister said the system was based on payment by results. 'The rate was on such a basis that, if an average man worked up to his ability, he could earn eight shillings a; day. Many men earned more.
