<i THE PREFCJkKXCE QUESTION'. Loudon, July 23. The Tariff Commission has issued a report tracing the development of colonial preference. The Commission contends that preference was the historic policy of England, but the old preference was withdrawn in deference to the free trade ideal and in opposition to the wis'hes of the colonies.
IRISH UNIVERSITIES BILL, Received 24, 10.28 p.m. Loudon, July 24. On the report stage of file Irish Universities Bill, the Lister members huuly tried to introduce amendments. .Many bitter speechc* were made. Sir William Anson (Oxford University) expressed his profound "dissatisfaction with the (iovemment's seheiue. The new University, lie said, would be under the thumb of the priestly hierarchy. It would be but a a theological seminary. Mr Birrell (.Secretary for Ireland) would carry the Bill by Such means as; had been used before the Act of Union. He had bought everybody worth buying. Mr.™. Redmond.agreed that the University would be freely and not clerically governed. /
DISESTABLISHING THE WELSH CHURCH. Received 24, 10.12 p.m. London, July 24. Replying to a deputation of Welsh Nonconformists, Mr. Asquith (Hie Pre mier)'presented a Bill for lilOfl to diefestablish and disendow the Churchi ol Wales.
