The shop of James l'aseoe, jeweller, Karaiigallake road, was, between 0.1)6 and 7 to-night, visited by a burglar,, who carried off jewellery to the value of £4OO. Air. Fascoe is -in the habit of going home to tea at 0.30, leaving o note on the door of the shop, winch is always locked, of course, stating iie will return at 7 o'clock. The burglar made his entrance through a window at the rear of the shop, and made a cleiuii sweep of almost everything, including a parcel of jewellery that had been left} on approval.
LAXITY 01? PARENTAL CONTROL. Aucklnnd, Last Night. Tlic laxity of parental control at the present time was the subject of some stringent remarks by Mr. C. C. Kettle, 8.M., at the Police Coiir tliis afternoon in the course of a ease in which a 12|-ycar-old boy was charged with stealing jewellery and money. 'The general laxity among the young people is appalling," said Mr. Kettle. A BURGLAR SUSPECT. Christchurch, Last Night. Three months ago Mrs. J. Best, of Redclifl's, reported to the police that her house had been entered in the afternoon during her temporary absence, and jewellery, valued at £O3 stolen. This afternoon Detectives Gibson and Ward arrested a mailed named Hayes in the city and charged him with the burglary. Most of the missing jewellery has been recovered.

Cable advice was received by the Mayor today slating that the Wellington city Joan of tIOO.OO 0(4 per cent, debentures at par) has been satisfactorily floated. It is expected the loan will net the Council about 1)8. ALLEGED THEFT. Auckland, Last Night. At tho Police Court this afternoon, James A. Schmidt was charged with the theft of five postal notes of various values. After considerable evidence was heard, the case was adjourned till Thursday.
AXEMLW'S ASSOCIATION. Kltham, Tuesday. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Axemen's Association was held last night. The annual report showed that « licenses had been issued during the year, and that 43 societies were afliliatcd. The profits on the year's workings amounted to C 43 odd. The receipts for the year, XiiSo 10s [)d, Included the gate takings at the Christmas carnival, which were a record for. the Association. Lord Plunket was reelected patron, and the following were appointed directors: —Alf. Hansen, r\ Anioore, T. Itcilly, T. a. Stannors, W. Stanners, G. W. Taylor, and h. Hill. . . THE GISBORNE SHOOTING AFFAIR. Gishorne, Tuesdav. , Walter Symonds was charged with, shooting with intent Mary Agnes Petersen at l'akarae on June 9. The evidence was much, the same as the account telegraphed at the lime of the shooting. The prisoner reserved his defence and was committed for trial. I SIIII'MASTER FIXED. Wellington, Tuesday. Another shipmaster, Captain Harvey, of the Queen of the South, was to-day proceeded against by the Marine Dcpardnent for failing to exercise his crew in boat drill, lit fining defendant 20* and cost* the Magistrate said if was_ absolutely necessary for the priv fecdon of passengers and crews that every master mariner should ninke himself acquainted with the Shipping and Seamen's Act.
