ACCLIMATISATION.

CONFERENCE OF SOCIETIES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The annual conference of the Acclimatisation Societies opened to-day. Ilie chairman (Mr. Tripp) in the course of his opening remarks, suggested that the whole of Kapiti Island should bo acquired for a bird sanctuary. He considered more scenic reserves should be set aside as bird sanctuaries, a'iiji emphasised the unsportsmanlike conduct of those whoo slaughtered ducks wholesale. It was the duty of societies not only to find birds to shoot, but to preserve birds for tliose who should come after. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr. L. Tripp; vice-president, Mr. C. A. Fitzroy; treasurer, Mr. L. U. Reid; secretary, Mr. N. Von Sturmoy; council, Messrs. E. W. Peyton and F. Earle (Auckland), J. .Tones (Stratford), W. Symes (Taranaki), E. N. Hifßtpm> (Wanganui), A. F. Lowe (Wellington), W. Pollard (Marlborough!), Dr. Moorhouse (Canterbury), R. Chisholm, and R. Forrest (Otngo), John Rutherford (South Canterbury), D. H. Feldwiek ISouthland). A motion that the Government should he asked for financial Yissistance in view of the loan that would be suffered by societies if a close season were enforced every years was lost.
