INDIGENCY IN THE TRANSVAAL

COMMISSION S REPORT. PREJUDICE AGAINST MANUAL WORK. Received 13th, 0.50 p.m. Pretoria, July 13. The Transvaal Commission appointed to study the question of indigency, finds the number of poor whites is increasing daily. This is traceable to the prejudice of the entire community against manual labor, and secondly arises from the primitive agricultural conditions and the fixed idea that every countryman must own land. The Commission recommended, inter alia, the establishment of n labor colony; the exclusion of undesirables; and the prohibition of Asiatic immigration.
