ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
SHOCKING KAILWAY ACCIDENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Chrintchurch, Last Night. A shocking railway accident occurred at Lyttclton this afternoon, as a result 51 of which Mr. J. Gilroy, chief engineer of the Itaituna, lost, hoth his feet. 'Mr. H Gilroy was crossing the railway yard J1 _ shortly before 3 o'clock while shunting " operations were in progress, and was struck hy a truck and knocked down. He fell on to the track, and the truck wheels passed over both legs, almost completely severing them. Mr. Gilrov was carried to the casualty ward, whe *e r it was found necessary to amputate hoth feet, and to-night lie was in a critical condition. A MAN DROWNED. Wellington, Last Night. t Three men were capsized from a punt i in Wellington harbor to-night owing to i a heavy swell caused by a passing t steamer. One of the men, James M?- < Cann, a single man, aged 35 years, for < many years in the service of the Union c Company, was drowned. 1 . GUN FATALITY. i Wanganui, Monday. A sad fatality occurred at Maxwflltown, sixteen miles from Wanganui, yesterday afternoon. Ballance Edgar 13 years >of age, son of Mr. F. Webb ; Jones, editor of the Wanganui Herald, was accidentally shot by his cousin. The boys were near the verandah, of the house, and tlieir attention wis directed to a gun standing on a corner of the verandah. The cousin took _np the gun to explain the mechanism. Not knowing that it was loaded, lie accidentally pulled the trigger and shot the other lad dead. BURNED TO DEATH. ; Auckland, Monday. John Dickey, a gum-digger, was ' found burned to death in his whare," " near Takapuna. » SUPPOSED SUICIDE. Thames, Monday, k The body of a man named Perciv.il 5 Tompking, a stranger to Thames, was '• found among the scrub on a hill, near the town, with a shot through the head '> and one hand grasping a loaded revolver. He was a tramway driver from 11 Melbourne. He arrived here last month and inquired the locality of fie ® cemetery.
INQUESTS. AVestport, Last Night. At the inquest to-night. touching the death of Richard Edward Itearse, evidence was given that the ball was thrown ia from the touch-line in Satur-| day's football match and passed over deceased's head. He turned round to gut! it, when another player, also jumping after the ball, collided with him. Me-i----cal evidence was given as to the internal injuries. A verdict of accidental death was returned, no blame being attachable to anyone. An inquiry touching the death of John Breen, of Bird road, was held on Friday, when the jury found that the deceased mot his death from dropsy of the lungs, caused by paralysis of the muscles of the chest, brought on by accidentally falling out of a trap and fracturing his spine.
