Writes our BahoUl correspondent : On Wednesday afternoon two teams of Maori footballers left here to play a like number of teams at Opunake. Though they had not their strongest teams, owing to several of the liest players being absent through sickness, they left hero in full force, and the procc-i .-ion, consi.-ting of a big brake crammed with footballers and followed by about ten vehicles loaded with barrackers, partook very much of the nature of a triumphal entry into Opunake; But, tin fortunately, o'n the football field the triumph was the other way about, Opunake seniors winning by about 33 points to nil, and the juniors winning by !' I points to nil. Mr. James Young rcfe.- ] eed in the senior match and Mr. J. Maitin in the junior. After the match all the teams sat down to dinner in Black's hotcl, and a successful dance in Hie Foresters' Hall concluded the day's outing. "I-air Play" writes to the Editor:— •Sir-Ail otherwise excellent report of the Clifton v. Elthnm football match in to-days issue was badly disfigured bv what at hrst sight appears to be a. malicious attack on the referee. Mr. Kivcll. and to even the most charitablv inclined' it would appear that (he reporter went rather out of his way to insult that gentleman and make him a subject for ridicule. The task of the, referee is, as you know, a. thankless one. and it is bad enough to hear spectators question the ruling of the controller of the {.Mine without reporters rushing into ovev forly lines of ■ unv. iled abuse siui|)ly liccauso their sparse knowledge of the game does not allow their narrow intellects to grasp its liner points. The display of cheap wit, let alone the shocking pot-pourri of ignorance, illiteracy, and bad taste, embodied ill vour report N not in keeping with the splendid repulat ion of your newspaper, and it would be well if. in future, vour reporters made their remarks as brier as possible when adversely criticising the referee. It would lie well if the Keferees' Association pve your scribe a chance to s-luiw his ability (or otherwise) with a whistle in a senior game next Tliursila v."
