Elms Demarisos, a. Greek sailor of the Jessie Burns, staled, through un interipreter, that he was watching on the steamer from (i p.m. on 30th to (> a.m. on the 31st May. He saw Zimmerman coming aboard about half-past nine with another man. Zimmerman called the witness "a name" and went forward to the boatswain's cabin, and there was drinking and singing Until 'after 11 o'clock. From the bridge the witness heard a noise below the deck almost underneath where he was standing. He went forward to sec what it was. He saw the boatswain at the door of the forecastle. The boatswain had a knife in his hand and told him there had been a fight. Witness went into the lorecastle, where he saw Zani on his bunk. Zani then went on deck and spoke to the boatswain. Witness followed, and heard Zimmerman come up calling Zani names. Zani said to Zimmerman: "I will let you know to-morrow what I am when you are sober." Zimmerman got out his knife and stabbed Zani. Bull Haase said to Zani, "Don't come any closer or I'll stab you." The next thing witness saw was another man, Nauzaak, holding Zani down. Zimmerman did fnc stabbing. The hearing was adjourned till to> morrow for the appearance of Zani.
