Before Mr. Riddell, S.M., to-day, Charles Frederick I'riest, a tobacconist, and hairdresser, pleaded guilty to a charge'of selling unlawfully at Petone a ticket by which permission waa given to the purchaser thereof to have interest in a scheme by which prizes were gained by a mode of chance. Chief-Detective Medrath stai.d that defendant had sold to a constable in plain clothes two tickets ill a sweep on the Wauganui Steeplechase. Twentylive thousand subscribers at 2s cacn were
supposed to enter tae sweefp. Hie first prize was to be £750, the second £3OO, the third £IOO, and the others were to divide £2OO. Defendant charged 2s 3d for each ticket, reserving 3d for himsel fas commission. Counsel
stated that accused did not know he was breaking the law. Only lit teen tickets had been sold in 'Petone, and the inonev- had since been returned to the purchasers. Defendant was lined £2 and costs.
Percy Simpson, his assistant, was fined £l, and John Turner, 011 a similar charge, was fined £2.
