OLD AGE TENSIONS. London, May 11. The friendly societies are asking Mr. H. 11. Asquith, the Premier, in awarding pensions not to take into account any income received from friendly societies or trades unions. IRELAND'S NATIONAL CAUSE. London, May 11. Hie executive of the United lriih League Jus issued a manifesto condemning Catholic who support Unionist candidates in the interests Of Catholic schools, since they thereby abandon the national cause of Ireland. THE HOP INDUSTRY. DISCUSSION IN THE LORDS. Received 12th, 0-55 p.m. London, May 12. The House of Lords adopted Lord Addington's motion as to the critical condition of the Kentish hop industry, which deserved the Government's immediate attention. The Archbishop of Canterbury expressed himself aghast at the condition of the Kentish villages. Lord Carriagton admitted the situation was very serious. The Government deeply sympathised with those engage in and affected by the industry, but was unable to entertain a dutv on foreign hops. Lord Harris insisted that the hup industry must be ruined unless the Gomoment intervened. Lord Lansdowne agreed that it was desirable to await the report of the Hop Committee, but insisted that forego competition was the main cause of U<trouble.
