The Archbishop of Canterbury expressed himself aghast at the condition of the Kentish villages. Lord Carriagton admitted the situation was very serious. The Government deeply sympathised with those engage in and affected by the industry, but was unable to entertain a dutv on foreign hops. Lord Harris insisted that the hup industry must be ruined unless the Gomoment intervened. Lord Lansdowne agreed that it was desirable to await the report of the Hop Committee, but insisted that forego competition was the main cause of U<trouble.
