NAPIER CARNIVAL
Per Press Association. Napier, Last Night. The native gala held on the Kecreation Ground to-day in connection with the carnival was an immense success. The attendance was a record for any sports gathering in Napier, and the crowd on the ground was only exceeded 011 the occasion of the visit of the Imperial troops. It is estimated that nearly eight thousand people were present. The programme comprised hakas, poi dances, caKe-walks, tug-of-war, wrestling, jumping, and running, and bicycle events for the natives. The entries were large, and the enthusiasm displayed by the competitors in every event lent additional excitement to the gathering. Many visitors described the dancing, both of the hakas and pois, as superior to that seen at the Exhibition.
The bowling tournament iu connccliDii with tlic carnival was commenced to-day. The following is the result of to-day's play:— First round: I'alnierstoii North, 40, beat Palmei'slon South, 10; Daunevirke, 10, beat Napier, 17; St. John's, 22, beat Wellington. 21; Marlon, 2-1, beat Greenuicadows, lo; Bluff Hill, 35, beat Hastings, 10; Palmerston North, 21, beat Napier, 20; Gisborne beat Greenmeadows; Masterton a bye. The following is the result of the second round of the bowling tournament:—Section A: Dannevirke, 23, beat Palmerston, !); Napier, 27, beat Wellington. 17: St. John's, 23, beat Gree.imcadows, 15; Palmerston, 30, beat Marton, Ift. Section IS: Bluff Hill, 25, beat Napier, 22; Palmerston North, 21, beat Hastings, 15; Greenmeadows, a bye; Gisborne v. Masterton to play.
