There was an unpleasant happening associated with the Queensland Turf Club's races on February 15th. and it is thus told of in the Daily Mail. It was the withdrawal by order of the stewards of Thalia from the February Handicap, after she had according to the rule con-
stituted herself a starter by going on Hie track. The circumstances of the case were peculiar, and it was in consequence of an oversight on the part of one or more of the officials that those who backed Thalia as a favourite soon after the market opened lost their money without getting a run. It appears that before the meeting opened a disturbance took place ,in tflie saddling
paddock, in which the lessee and trainer of the mare, J. Cross, was immediately concerned, and acting upon a complaint lodged by (.'. Koghan, who alleged that lie hat! been knocked about by Cross and others, the stewards opened an enquiry. The hearing of the evidence lasted until just before the time for the starting of the February Handicap, and it was not until after Thalia had left the euclosure that the stewards arrived at the decision to disqualify both Cross and the mare for six months. Immediately upon the decision being made Thalia was ordered back, and her number was removed from the board. In connection with the disqualification of Thalia, though the rule is explicit enough on the point, it is understood that the principal of the local fielders, recognising that under the circumstances the post backers of the mare would lie harshly treated if compelled to pay, decided to return all moneys paid to him and to cry oil' all the wagers made on her account.
