After one oi the Keenest and must exciting matches seen On the Warrington ground this season, the iSew Ze.ilauders were beaten by Warrington liy a point. Except that Smith was absent, the -Sew Zealanders put their strongest team i« the field. Warrington had their best team. The ground was slippery at the outset, and it looked as it the colonials would be routed, but suddenly they improved, and opened their score with a splendid goal, ticked by Messenger from near the touch-line, 'lhe visitors pressed hotly, and Howe, taking a pass from Wynyard, got close to the line and then passed to Messenger, who dodged opposition and ran behind the posts. Messenger kicked, a goal, giving the New Zealanders a couple of points lead, which was held till half time. In the second spell Warrington attacked continuously but the blacks gave a superb exhibition of defensive play. Scrummage aft<r scrummage took place on the line, and it seemed every moment as if the visitors must lose their lead, but Wrigley, Turtill and Messenger tackled in sucli wonderful style that the home attacks came as nought. At length a flaw was found in the defence. Lees got away, from a serum and passed to Taylor, who, amid a scene of wild enthusiasm, crossed the line just before the finish. Messenger almost snatched a victory by kicking a trifle short from a penalty near mid-field.
