Everyone got away without the slightest difficulty, after burying their furniture in a trench. It is reported that the saws and belts of the sawmills were saved, but Gaminan Bros, lose 00,000 feet of sawn timber, besides the mill, machinery, and buildings.

Palmerston North, Last Night. Reports from I'ohaiigina to-day show that the absence of wind yesterday and light showers of rain during the night greatly assisted to quell the fires in the valley. Settlers have been lessening the danger by removing grass and logs from the vicinity of their houses and buildings.

FIRES FRESHEN UP. Eketahuna, Xast Night. Tlie wind last- night caused the firea to freshen in the Uistrict. They are most severe at Hukanui, where houses owned liy J. Bond and U. Turner, settlers, were completely destroyed, the settlers fighting the Haines all the night. Several families moved out ot the fire zone and left the houses to take their chance. Poppiewell's timber mill was only saved by unremitting efforts of a large band of workmen. Hundreds of acres of grass and fencing were destroyed. In other parts of the district settlers were compelled to work all night protecting their homes? There was a slight fall of rain after midnight, and, the wind changing, relieved the situation, though the fire 3 are still burning.
