THE NEW TARIFF.
Per Tress Association. lnvercvargill, Last Night. The coming into operation of the new tariff to-morrow has caused something of a iluttcr in Customs work. The principal changes are in regard to sugar, dried fruits, and boots and shoes. The reduction in duties on the first two has caused the importer to allow stocks to full as low as possible in order to escape the heavier duties under the old tariff. Boot-importers, on the other bund, have cleared heavily. Sugar could not be bought in any quantity in town to-day, and some merchants had sold every grain in store. Several wholesale dealers in dried fruits, to avoid having hcavy_ stocks on hand at the old duty rates," shipped goods to Melbourne and back, and have thus evaded duties.
