A CHARGE OF MURDER
TRAGEDY AT A MAORI SETTLEMENT. Per Press Association. Auckland, Tuesday. ■ The Star's Dargaville correspondent says a fracas resulting in a tragedy occurred on Saturday at Maropiu, twelve miles from Dargaville. A native gathering was being held in connection with a christening ceremony. Early in the morning Waitene Reihana had an altercation with his wife. He walked away to an adjacent storehouse. His wife followed with a bridle in hand with which to catch the horse. Shortly afterwards Reihana returned. His face was cohered wi-Uj blood. He exclaimed, "I am killed." Later on he fell unconscious and died. At night his wife returned from the neighboring settlement, not anticipating the fatality. Slie swooned on learning of her husband's death. After the inquest the wifp, Peti Waitene, was arrested and charged with murder. She ,was remanded for a week. Reihana was 47 years of age and his wife 46. They had si/, children. Accused is a woman of high rank.
