Mr Joseph West has been elected to till the vacancy on the Borough Council, made vacant by the death of the late Mr. Pikett. At the Municipal Chambers, Auckland, last night, the Mayor presented Mr. Laurence Frost, chief engineer of the Kapauui, with the Kuyal Humane Society's medal and certificate for gallantry in connection with the collision between the Kapauui and Claymore in Auckland harbour on Christinas Eve, lUUs.—Press wire.
ISy the steamer Nairnshire there arrived yesterday at Auckland Mr. Bon Tillett, the prominent English Labor leader, and one of the chief organisers of the great association of dock-laborers in the Old Country. Mr. Tillett, who visited New Zealand about toil years ago, has come out to the Dominion again for the benefit of his health, and incidentally to inquire into the social condition of our people. He addressed a meeting of wharf-laborers this afternoon. He intends visiting Wellington and some of the other labor centres, leaving the Dominion on his way to Australia in about a mouth or six weeks.—Press wire.
