A sensational incident occurred at Roto-o-rangi, Waikato, the other daV. A violent thunderstorm visited the district, and Air Smith, manager for Air .Mackcreth, was struck on the side of the face by lightning, one ear being slightly scorched. Air Smith was riding across a paddock at the time, and carrying a knife, with which he had been skinning a sheep. Two bullocks, a short distance a Way, were killed outright by I he lightning.
Written judgment has been given in the case Alontefiore v. Kyngdon, which was heard last week. This'was an action brought to recover £O7 8s 2d, the balance of an account for stone supplied by the plaintiff to the* defendant, and urtaiu payments made bv the plaintiff on behalf of the defendant, The judgment went into considerable detail as to the quantity of stone delivered. His Worship considered the weight of evidence on this point considerably in fav.ir of the plaintiff. The quantity was estimated at 784 yards of crushed stone. Judgment was given for the plaintiff for £O2 10s 4d, and costs ( £C 12s).
On and after Holiday next. 30th inst., the multiple switchboard will be installed at the local Telephone Exchange. The mode of working will be slightly different to that now in vogue. When a connection is required, it will be necessary for a subscriber to ring up Exchange, state number and name of subscriber required, and tlu'ii wait without ringing until the answering voice of the person with whom it is wished to communicate is heard. No further ringing is to be done until the conversation is concluded, when "ring off" signal should be given. As the attendants at the Exchange will be unfamiliar with the new system, it is respectfully requested that subscribers will show a little forbearance if their requests are not promptly complied with. The Board of School Commissioners consists of five members, and of these two are members of Parliament. Three members form a quorum. Tims, during the session of Parliament, owing to the inability of the two M.'sH.R. to altend, it is absolutely necessary that the remaining three—Messrs ,T. Wade, H. Faull and F. Simpson—should H present at meetings if the Board's business is to continue without interruption. The Board discussed this matter yesterday, and decided to protest against the manner of constituting the Board. The three members present nil spoke of the inconvenience of the present system, but nil spoke very highly of Messrs Jennings and Major, the i,vo .absentee M.'sH.R. The protest, will be forwarded to the proper quarter.
