Oil Thursday night the Tongap vu'.u people gave a banquet to Mr. li. Julian, who was for a number of years f.lovernment Road Inspector and has now left the service. Although the night was wit and stormy, the hall was well filled. Mrs. McKoy, of the- Ferry Boardinghouse, did the catering, and gave satisfaction to the most fastidious. The hall was nicely decorated by willing hands. The speeches were rather short, but lo the point. Mr. John Nheoliy, of Okau, 1 presented an illuminated address and a goltl chain and pendant. Dancing was then introduced ami kept going till daylight. On Friday night the Cricket Club gave a supper and dance, which was equally well attended. Oil both nights the music was supplied by Miss McKenzie, of Uruti.
The weather has been wet and cold for the last month, making the tracks all but impassable. A sharp frost a week ago blackened the early potatoes and the plum blossom. Grass is not too plentiful either. There is no roadmaking, but plenty of bushfelling. Messrs. J. (I. F.nstwood and T. Gibson have sold their farms, one to Mr. F. Itelshar and the other to Mr. C. Chapman. The former went to Jamaica and the latter to Australia. Their departure has affected the school attendance. There are not move than seven or eight left now. The Okau l'oad is very bad, and will be for many days. Xo chiMr-n can come from there. "What is wanted is two half-time schools, The Waitara cutter, after wailing sixweeks for a favourable sea, managed to get in this week.
