The Borough Council licld its usual forlniglity meeting list night Tliere were present; His Worship the Mayor (xUv. E. Doekrill), and Bellringer, Coleman, Collis, Mills, Morey, Cilttley, and Browne. TJIE RAILWAY CKOSSING, In respect to the complaint by the Mayor to the statiomnaster that the afternoon train 011 September 14th outwards crossed Devon street at full speed without any signalman having Wilved the usual warning flag, the stutionmastcr had intimated liv telephone message that the mistake was owing to the fact tlut a new man had been engaged, and he had not known that he was to precede the train. Or. Bellringer carried a motion asking for a written reply. Ho and Cr. Brown spoke of the great danger to the public by the departure from the usu:\J system of warning, and aoped the /mistake would not be repeated. LEMON' STREET DRAINAGE.
Cr. Bellringer presented a petiwu» from twenty property-owners ill Lemon street complaining of a dirty side-chan-nel near Eliot street. —The Mayor said the sewer extension reiniired bad been authorised, and would be gone on with as soon as the wwiUi 'i- v:as snitilile. He had taken the responsibility of •stopping the work some time ago, on account of the shortage of funds at the time. —The engineer will report on the question of still further sewer extcn- j sion in Lemon street westward of Eliot street. ; this KliiPTTf! Tho Mayor reported that he had, in company with Mr Kendall, visited tlie septic tank the other day. As a result of alterations by Mr Kendall, it was working well. There was no smell at all, even when the sealed chamber was opened. And he ougliij to remark, too, that there was now 110 necessity for t'ne use of the shovel in clearing the entrance, as in the Lite engineer's time. He suggested that the Council should inspect the tank,, and that the public should be assured that there was now 110 objectionable feature about the tank as had been previously reported. . ' I 1
GENERAL. Oil t'iio motion of Cr. Mills it .was decided to refer to the Works Comittec the matter of providing a level crossing from the footpath on the corner of Vivian and Kobe streets. The engineer will report as to the probable cost of about half-a-dozen receptacles for rubbish to be placed in different parts of Devon street.. The recommendation of the Electric Light Committee, to pay the balance of .Mr Mestayer's commission upon the ] flotation of the electric light loan, was j sent on to t'iie Finance Committee. The Council adopted the Reserves Committee's recommendation to accept Mr M. Johnston's tender of £ls per annum for grazing rights over fliej South paddock, and £ll for the central pitldock, on the racecourse reserve. Cr. Mills drew attention to the danger arising from insufficient fencing in Powderham street (old founvirv site) and in King street—Referred to the engineer. It was 'decided to notify propertyowners to clear furze from the roaJs fronting their properties. The District Health Officer will be' asked for a reply to the Council's letter in connection with the failures to no-' tify cases of infections disease.
