A MONTHS RAILWAY TRAFFIC.

The Gazette contains some instructive figures relative to the working of our railways. Oil the Wellington-Napier-New Plymouth section for the four weekly period ending 17th August last,' there were 204,714 passengers carried in both classes as compared with 180,411 for the, corresponding period of 1900; season tickets have increased from 3547 to 448(i. All North Island lines show increased rcceips excepting the Kailm Valley, which has dropped from £4lO to £347. There have also been corresponding increases of expenditure, and the expenditure exceeds the revenue on the Kawakawa, Kailm, and Gisborne-Karaka lines. This is not the case with any of the Southern lines.

The number of passengers carried from Ist April, 1007, to 17th August, was 3,301,110, an increase of 02,080. Large increases in this period are recorded in the carriage of chaff, lime, etc., timber, merchandise and minerals.
