A MONTHS RAILWAY TRAFFIC.
The Gazette contains some instructive figures relative to the working of our railways. Oil the Wellington-Napier-New Plymouth section for the four weekly period ending 17th August last,' there were 204,714 passengers carried in both classes as compared with 180,411 for the, corresponding period of 1900; season tickets have increased from 3547 to 448(i. The goods traffic has materially increased from 4!),539 tons, to 54,417 toils, but while the carriage of stockj- etc., rose from 42,0(13 head to I 71,941 in August 1907, what, are designated include horses and dogs—dropped from 19,471 in 1900 to 19,241 in 1907. The total revenue of the section has, however, increased from £43,808 to £50,9.14. Timing the earnings of the lines of the two islands—a total of 2474 miles —an increase of 50 miles for 1907—it will be found that the 1)53 miles in the North Island earned £84,373 as 1521 miles in the South Island earned £105,302, of which £324 was contributed by the Lake Wakitipu steamers. All North Island lines show increased rcceips excepting the Kailm Valley, which has dropped from £4lO to £347. There have also been corresponding increases of expenditure, and the expenditure exceeds the revenue on the Kawakawa, Kailm, and Gisborne-Karaka lines. This is not the case with any of the Southern lines.
The number of passengers carried from Ist April, 1007, to 17th August, was 3,301,110, an increase of 02,080. Large increases in this period are recorded in the carriage of chaff, lime, etc., timber, merchandise and minerals.
