NEWTON KING'S HORSE FAIR REPORT.

Mr Newton King reports as follows: On Saturday I held my annual spring horse fair; the sale was most successful. There was a very large attendance from .all parts of the district. Bidding was spirited from start to finish of the sale. The catalogue comprised 192 horses of all sorts, from weeds to draughts. The horses yarded were a very creditable lot, showing a vast improvement all round as compared with -cveral years ago. This to all parties is very gratifying, and the sale proved without a doui;t that good stuff will always command a ready sale. Unbroken horses met with best competition, scarcely any being unsold. As a matter of fact considerably over 100 horses were sold, the class chiefly going home being weeds and light hacks. Vendors' reserves in some cases were far too high, and several were offered good market | value but declined to sell; it is useless vendors expecting to obtain draught prices for half-draughts.. The sale proved conclusively that a successful horse fair can be run here, and I venture to predict that in a few years the Stratford horse fair will be looked upon as equal to any along the coast. I quote: —Unbroken 3-year-old three - quarter draughts £2O 'to £27 10s, 3-year-old half-draughts £l4 to £2l, 4-ycar do. £8 to £lO 10s, yearling do. £4 17s Od to £O, lighter class £5 to £lB 10s, broken draughts {%) £35 to £4O, halfdraughts £2O to £33, spring-carters £l9 to £2B, milkcart horses £lB to £25, upstanding hacks £l2 10s to £22, harness horses £lO to £lO 10s, ordinary hacks £4 to £lO, weeds from 30s to '£4.
