Cattle: At the Newmarket yards on Tuesday cattle were yarded in usual numbers, bidding for fat stock being very brisk. On last week's rates prices advanced fully as per 1001b. Oxen realised 30s per'lOOlb, cows 20s to 24s per 1001b. Steers sold at from £7 17s Od to £l7, cows £4 15s to £0 17s Od, dairy cows from £4 as to £8 10s, heifers £3 5s to £6, empty cows £1 18s to £3 15s, calves 15s to £1 Bs. A draft of 16 steers from Messrs Gollan Bros., Panmure, averaged £l6 0s lOd. Nearly all the fat steers sold at over £ll each. Sheep were yarded in average numbers at Newmarket on Tuesday, and advanced fully 5s per head on last week's rates, wethers selling at from £1 6s fid to £1 19s 3d, nma £l. Is to £1 Us 9d, hoggets 10s 9d to CI 5s Od. Spring lambs, the first of the, season, sold at from 15s 8d to £1 2s 9d, averaging £1 per head all through. Pigs: Porkers sold from 18s Od to £1 17s, baconers £2 Is to £3 2* Od. weaners 10s Od to 17s 6d. Hides: Market firm. WOOL, HIDE, SHEEPSKIN & TALLOW SALE REPORT. Messrs Young, Hobbs and Co. report: —On Tuesday, 17th inst., we held our monthly sale of above produce. We had a satisfactory catalogue, which showed an increase in hides and calfskins. Bayers were numerous from all parts of the island, with the result that bidd'ng was spirited throughout. In comparison, hides made equal value to last month's rates, notwithstanding the disquieting cables from outside sources. Sheepskins and wool also maintained recent prices. Tallow realised a shade lower in unison with recent London re ports. We quote:— Butchers' cow hides 4%d to 4%d, light do. 4d to 4»/ 4 d, cut do. 4%d, settlers' cow 3'/jd to 4y;.d, cut and slippy do. 2d to 3Vsd; calfskins, good 5d to 5%d, medium do. 4'/ 2 d to sd, slippy and damaged 3d to 3%d. Wool in sacksDead fleece 6%A, crutchings 4y 2 d to i%i, tallow, fair quality (cask) 24s cwt, bones £4 per ton, cow tails Is Id doz.: sheepskins—best woolly pelts 4s 2d to 6s 2d, medium 3s to 4s, short-woolled and damaged pelts Is to 2s 6d, butchers' salted skins 4s 6d to 5s 7d.
DUXEDIX STOCK MARKET. Dunedin, Sept. 18. At the Burnside stock market to-day, 2926 sheep were penned, principally unfinished sorts, with a few pens of prime quality. Prices for unfinished sheep were from 2s to 2s 6d easier, but prime did not suffer any decline. Best wethers 24s to 265, extra' to 29s (Id, medium 22s 6d to 23s 6d, light and inferior 20s to 21s 6d, best ewes 20s to 235, medium 17s to 19s 6d. Cattle —212 yarded, including a number of medium class. Compared with last week prices were from 20s to 25s per head easier, but in comparison with former sales late values were realised. Best bullocks £lO 2s fkl to £ll, best heifers £8 2s 6d to £9, extra to £lO 15s. Pigs—loo yarded. Xice quality pigs met with good competition, suckers np to 21s, porkers 30s to 475, baconers 40s to 80s.
THE ADDINGTON MARKET. Christchureh, Sept. 18. At the Addington live stock market to-day the yarding of stock was small. and there was a good attendance. Fat cattle showed a rise in price. Fat sheep were firmer, and store sheep sold well. Pigs, especially sows, were in good demand. Store and dairy cattle were dull of sale. Store sheep—The offering consisted principally of hoggets, which sold about up to last week's rate. A line of 527 sound-mouth ewes made 173 Od, 45 wethers 20s 7d, and 66 two-tooths 10s (id. Hoggets sold as follows: 129 at 20s 6d. 60 at 19s 6d, 118 at 18s 9d, 835 at 17s lid, 331 at 17s, 112 at 16s Bd, 200 at 16s 6VI, 81 at 13s 9d. 207 at 13s 3d, 200 at 12s lOd, and smaller lots 13s 8d to 17s Id. Fat lambs—Twentv were entered, and sold at 12s to 20s fof smaller, 22s to 30s for heavier weight. Fat sheep—There was a short supply, j principally crossbreds and merino wethers. There was not such a large proportion of heavyweights as last week, but prices were fully as high, so that the value per lb showed an advance. The range of prices was: Extra prime wethers 35s to 37s 6d, prime 25s to 31s, lighter 21s to 24s 6d, prime ewes 21s to 25s 6d, others 13s 3d to 17s Id, prime merino wethers 19s to 24s 6d. Fat cattle—The yarding totalled 182 bead, principally light weights. There was keen competition, and values improved to the extent of about 2s 6d per 1001b for prime beef. Steers brought £6 12s 6d to £l4, heifers £5 to £il 10s, and cows £5 7s 6d to £0 2s 6d and £10 —equal to 30s to 32s 6d for prime and 22s 6d to 25s for medium per 1001b. Veal calves sold at 5s 6d to 40s, according to size and quality. Store and dairy cattle—There were only a few odd lotc offered. Well-grown and good-conditioned were saleable, but poor sorts were neglected. Yearlings made 235, 15 months' 355, two-year heifers (good) £2 15s, dry cows 20s to £3 10s. The dairy cows were mostly aged and in low condition, and were dull of sale at £3 10s to £7 ss. Pigs—There was a fair entry of mixed I quality. Choppers were easier. Baconers and porkers sold about the same as last week. Store pigs were in keen demand, and sold well, especially small sorts. Choppers sold up to £5, baconers 50 to 65s (equal to 5d to 5 ! / a d per lb), porkers 25s to 40s (equal to 5d to s'/ 2 d per lb-, large stores 30s to 345, medium 25s to 28s, wcaners 12s to IDs.
