PROVINCIAL NEWS.
RAHOTU NOTES. I There is a good deal of sickness prevalent hero; nearly every house has some inmate laid up. Measles is the prevailing complaint. Mr A. Baker, of Kahotu, is, I regret to state, rather seriously ill with piieu-! nionia. Mr (.'has. Chrisp, of the Kahui road, is the latest of our settlers to go in for the milking machine. He is having two Lawrence-Kennedy machines fitted up, to be driven by an oil engine. Messrs R. Morrow and A. Chapman have just finished installing their machines. Mr Frank Baker, whilst working on the Wirenui road on Tuesday, met with a serious accident, cutting his foot very badly. He was taken to Opunake and attended to by Dr. Morrison, who ordered his removal to the Ilawera Hospital. Mr W. R. Wright had a clearing sale of his milk herd on Wednesday. There was a good attendance, and satisfactory prices were realised. The final euchre party of the series in aid of the Raholu Hall was held on Wednesday night, and was well attended. The prizes were won by—ladies' (set of brushes) Miss A. Morgan, gentlemen's (bit and pocket-book- Mr S. L'oombes. After supper dancing was indulged in, music being supplied by Mrs Leng. .Mr Rothcry made an efficient M.C. As a result of these euchre parties the hall fund will benefit to the extent of over £2O. It is intended to shortly hold a basket social, which should further augment the amount.
WAREA. The tumuul meeting of the local cricket chili was held on Wednesday night. There was a good number of members present, and -Mr N. 11. Watt presided. The secretary (Mr C. W. Corbett) read the balance-sheet, which was of a satisfactory nature. Mr C. Corbett was reelected secretary and treasurer. The other officers appointed were: Captain, 3lr Watt; president, Mr H. Corbett; vice-captain, 13. Anderson; vice-presi-dents, Messrs G. Jones and E. Aylward; the subscription was fixed at 5s for the season. A picnic will be held on the 2lith inst., when a married v. single match will be played. A bat that was given by Mr Watt for the best attendance at practices will be presented at tlie dance on the 20th inst. The final euchre party, postponed from a previous date, was held in the hall on Friday night in fine weather. There was not a very large gathering. Mr Victor llnhiiiton and Olive Julian tied for firs! place, and received a prize each. The ladies' prizes were annexed by Mrs Millar and Miss K. Aylward. A capital supper was handed round, and much appreciated by all. After supper the room was cleared for dancing, and was kept going until an early hour. The hall will gain £4 13s fld out of the six euchre parties.
A school children's conccrf was held in the hall on Tuesday, 17th. The night was a glorious one, and the hall was packed with people hailing from Oakura to Pungarehu. The children's performance was excellent, and reflected credit upon their teacher (Mis 6 Evans). The music was supplied by Miss Francis. The programme was as follows: Selection, Mrs and Messrs Duckcr; song, Miss Baden Wade; dumbell drill, little ones; song, Miss Kathleen Murphy; recitation, Miss Kathleen Tobin; song, "Strike up the Music," children; pianoforte duet, Misses Larking and Francis: dumbbell drill; song, Annie Mace; pianoforte trio, Misses Vera Clothier and E. Wade; song. Master Bernard Judge; recitation, Annie Maco; song, Mr R. Phillips; club drill; recitation, Miss Evans; song, ''We Hail the Winter King," children; Swedish drill; song, Mr R. Phillips; selection Dueker family. After the concert a number of prizes were presented to the children for proficiency in various subjects. Mr George Jones occupied the chair. The room was afterwards cleared for dancing, which was kept going until the early hours. The music was supplied by the Duckcr family, Miss Francis and Mrs W. Harrison. Mr T. E. Marking made an able M.C. The takings at the concert and dance amounted to £5 12s.
