AUSTRALIAN NAVIGATION COMMISSION.
PREFERENCE TO BRITISH SHIPS. Melbourne, September 5. The Kavigatioii Commission presented its final report to the Federal GovernBest. The main recommendation is that only British subjects shall be employed on vestelß registered in Australia. The majority of the Navigation ComtiiinAm recommends that the coastal! trade of the Commonwealth be reserved to ahipa on the Australian register, or conforming to Australian conditions, ■nd licensed to trade oa the coast; BritVk """1 steamers carrying passengers to be exempt. The reservation, however, would only apply pending the construction of a railway between West Australia and Smith Australia. It is 4llao recommended that subsidised foreign ships be prohibited from participating in the coastal trade. Endorsement is given to the Imperial Navigation Conference proposal for exempting from new conditions involving structural alterations in the accommodation for officers and crew all vessels built prior to the enactment of such conditions.
