BUTTER SEASON IN AUCKLAND.
An Auckland writer says: "Next month the butter season will commence again in real earnest. The dairying industry now has climbed to such a position in this province that in a year or two Auckland will be the largest exporter of butter of any province in the colony, and butter-making then will be looked upon as one of the staple industries. Last season's make of butter increased by 1000 tons, and this year a very large increase, even on last year's output, is expected, although the industry may be well content if the coming season shows an advance at all on last season's great record. Estimates are noi much to be relied on, but, given fair climatic conditions, the total make of the 1907-8 season should see ail increase of 500 tons on last year's output. The present position in regard to the actual trade is arousing the keenest interest among those who have acquaintance with the industry, and the outcome wiil be of considerable importance This time last year practically all the output was disposed of or arranged for, but this year the difference between the buyers' and producers' ideas of the value is holding up transactions, and at the present time practically none of the output is arranged for. Last year the buyers were racing each other to secure the output of the factories, but this year the factories are looking for the buyers. The market indications are that the prices at Home will be up to the true values of last year, but not up to the boom prices at the opening of the 1000-7 season."
