SERIOUS RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
THROWN OFF RAILS BY ROCK SLIP. Per Press Association. Grcymouth, August 18. An accident happened yesterday morning to a passenger train from Otira to . ;' Groymouth, whereby an engine and three cars were derailed. The train had only covered three miles of the. journey when the driver noticed a large rock coming tearing down the hill. He whistled for brakes, which were promptly applied, but the lino was covered with snow. The rock struck the cow-catcher . of the engine, and rebounding, struckthe first car. The engine and three cars wore derailed. In the front car were two passengers, who were thrown off the seat, but were not injured. The en- .. gine-driver and fireman stuck to their : r post. The engine and carß were severe- - 3 ly damaged, the axle boxes being broken ["2 and the cowcatcher carried away. A, J gang of men left town, and hid the J line cleared by noon.
