FIJI TRADE WITH AUSTRALIA.
STATEMENT BY THE GOVERNOR. Per Press Association. Auckland, August 18. In the Fiji Times of July 24, the following, signed by tho Governor (Sir Edward lm Tlmni), appears ou the subject of preference with Australia: "I think it well to stale, for general information, that negotiations between the Commonwealth Government and that of Fiji on tlie subject of Australian duty on bananas, are proceeding, but that, as far as I am aware, no definite result has been attained. Certainly the suggestion that there has been, or can be, any question of 'preference' as between the Commonwealth and Fiji is entirely unfounded; but if, as the result of a mutual agreement between the two Governments; both decide to modify their duties on certain foodstuffs in the general interests and without preference to any particular price, a wide-reaching benefit will, it is believed, be attained.
