SUICIDE OF A NATIVE.

Sergeant Bernard received information on Friday evening, says the Star, that a Maori named Henu Tahupotiki, aged 30, had attempted suicide between 6 and 6 o'clock by shooting himself in the abdomen with a double-barrelled gun at Weiiiweri pah, Hastings road. His brother was summoned from Okaiawa, as was also Dr Koonan from Manaia, who rendered preliminary aid, Constable Clouston, of Normanby, went out to the pah, and had an ambulance van sent in from Elthani, and the injured man was brought into the Hawera Hospital at between 3 and 4 o'clock the following morning. The hospital surgeons performed an operation on Saturday morning and his condition has improved, but it is too early yet to say what his chances are for a recovery. The sufferer is a married man, and the reason ho gave for his rash act was that he had been drinking. La.ter. Per Press Association. Hawera, August 18.
