SUPREME COURT.
CRIMINAL SESSION. Per Press Association, Auckland. August 8. The Criminal Sessions of the Auek[land Supreme Court was continued beI fore Mr Justice Dennlston to-day. A charge of attempting to steal sheep belonging to H. C. Glass of Broadwood, near Kawene, on April 26 last, was preferred against James George Ferguson, a respectably-dressed man about 35 or iO years, who pleaded not guilty. Accused owned a .property on the opposite side of the road to prosecutor. Accused, on oath, stated that he possessed close on 2000 acres of land in the Hokianga district, most of which was freehold. On his section adjoining Mr Glass' property at Broadwood he had some 60. sheep and a similar number of cattle. He denied the charge. To Mr Tole: He tfas convicted twenty years ago for Btealing a pig. He had ialso been convicted for assault.
His Honor, having summed up, the jury returned half an hour later with a verdict of guilty. Constable Beasley. stated that accused bore a very bad character in the district. His Honor passed sentence of two years' hard labor. David Rcnnant was arraigned upon a charge of committing a serious offerfce upon a girl under 1# ycarß at Hamilton on July 25 last. Prisoner said he wished to ask for an adjournment, as his wife was ill in the hospital, and was unable to attend, and lie wanted her as a witness. The caße waß adjourned until to-morrow.
