PERILS OF THE SEA.
' A WIND-BUFFETED SHIP. Per Press Association. Auckland, August 8. The barque Don, bound for Adelaide ,o Uio English Channel, with a cargo of ivlieat, is anchored in Hauraki Gulf. The vessel sailed on July 3, and met with pevy rough weather from the start of the voyage. Going on the south-about passage the weather was extreme, and tlio captain decided to make a more northerly course in the hope of meeting finer weather conditions, and got a few days' respite, when a series of gales were encountered always ahead, and the vessel rau before the gale, making the Three Kings about three weeks ago. Since then the vessel has been buffeted about by heavy easterly gales between the North Cape and East Cape, endeavoring to make the voyage to the eastward, but owing to the weather it could [not be managed. Captain AllßOpp, who
s in command, suffered so severely from nxiety that his health completely broke lown, insomnia being his trouble, and le decided to put into Auckland for nodical treatment. Captain Allsopp, who was formerly in command of the barque Brusesls, came ashore, and has gone into a prlvnte hospital, but it is expected he will be well enough in five or six days to proceed on the voyage. The vessel is undamaged. STEAMER'S SEVERE EXPERTPERIEKCE. Per Press Association. Wellington, August 8. ; The cargo steamer Largo Law, which arrived to-day from Newcastle, had a severe experience. The steamer left Newcastle on August 1. Next day she encountered a north-east gale, with a tremendous sea. This lasted four days, with constant rains. Seaa swept the decks so frequently that it was dangerous to move about. An enormous sea stove in the port lifeboat.
