The value of basic slag for winter top-dressing for grass lands in every year is becoming more apparent. Mr Newton King, who imports the celebrated Scotia brand, reports largely increasing sales and gratifying testimony from last year's customers. The strongest point in its favor is that while last year's application was attended by enormously .increased growth of grass its elfect is still painty visible even on the winter growth the pasture being thicker and of a richer growth wherever the slag was applied. To give the best results the manure should lie applied in the winter So as to receive the' full benefit of the heavy rain-, heme Mr King's advice to order now.
At Waiwakaiho on Tuesday next illKing will sell by auction, without rekerve. the whole of Mr Andrew Neilson's dairy herd, including a pure-bred pedigree Shorthorn bull. Particulars are advertised in another column.
| In our auction columns will be found a long list of articles to be sold by auction, without reserve, at the Old' Curiosity Shop. Mrs Kennington is going farming, and her stock mu>t be sold. Messrs Wilsou and Nolan are the auctioneers, and we anticipate they will have a busy time. The Taranaki Education Board have l>een fortunate in securing the sen-ices of Miss Grant, 31A., of the New Plymouth High School, to conduct Saturday classes for teachers in Nature Study anil English. The former class will commence on August 3rd, and on alternate Saturdays from 10 to 11 a.m., and the latter from 2 to 4 on the intervening Saturdays, commencing on August 10th. In another column Mr Newton King advertises a farm of 433 acres to be sold at bis Rabotu yards on Tuesday, Bth August, on account of Mr James Millar. Mr F. P. Corkill invites tenders, to close to-day at 4 p.m., for the removal of 1200 yards of earthwork. Wilson and Nolan direct attention to the clearing sa'e of Mr J. Tipping' dairy herd, etc., on the Frankley road on Thursday next. The herd is one of the best in the district, having a test average of 4.4 at the factory for a periojt of three years.
The first of a series of socials in aid of the fnnds of a Young Men's Club will be neld In St. Joseph's Bclioolroom on Tuesday evening. Tickets are selling well. Tho refreshment arrangements are in charge of Mrs Dr. McLellaml,' wjhile the musical portion of the entertainment is In the hands of a first-rate musician. The floor is to receive special attention. Several ladies and gentlemen have kindly consented to render songs during the evening, so that on the i whole those who attend on Tuesday nighi can be assured of spending an enjoyable time.
