TARURUTANGI ROADS.
PETITION h'KUM THE SETTLERS.
Hon. T. Kelly, M.L.C-, has promised to again bring before the Hon. Minister for Public Works tile claims of the settlors for a Government subsidy to fssist in metalling the King, Upland, and Hursthouse roads. Tile petition for-, warded to the Minister last year will again be presented, and Mr H. Okey, M.il.R., will be asked to lend his aid. the petition, which is to be forwarded by occupiers of land in the Tarurutangi district on the roads mention d, brings under the notice of the Minister the disabilities which the settlers suffer from want of good roads on which lo convey milk to the dairy factory in tile district, inis district was first disposed of by trie Crown nearly fifty years ago. At that period it was heavily timbered and cut up by streams and ridges. The country unfortunately was not sufficiently explored to enable roads to be laid oil' iu the best places to ensure easy grades; consequently large expense had since been incurred in making deviation* to secure fair in addition to clearing land for Uying down in grass, and the difficulties of getting to and from their land, they were burdened by heavy rates and loans for the purpose of making roads wiiich in more favored districts had in the first instance been formed at the expense of the colony- Under these special circumstances the petitioners thought the -Minister would see that some help from the Government was absolutely necessary, so that they might be pl.iced on a level with oilier more fortunate districts, and so that, the settlers would be able to convey their milk to the factory without wading through mud for half the season.
