At a meeting of the "Western Park Hoard on Tuesday evening, the new members, Messrs. Morcy ami Cattlev, being present on behalf of the Borough Council, Mr. G. W. Browne was unanimously re-elected chairman, secretary, and treasurer. -Messrs. Collett and Co. are now engaged in making the diversion of the Jluatoki Stream, which- runs through their property situated between Courtenny and Vivian streets, of a permanent and substantial character. Iron-shod idles are being driven to a depth of eight and nine feet below river-bed level, the piling work being sheathed with heavy limbering and backed with earth, forming a very solid piece of work. Protective work, on the most approved system, has also been erected at the lower end of the stream to prevent any possible damage being caused by flood-water to adjacent property. The work is under the direction of Mr. J. R. Cruickshank I Messrs. Collett's representative), and the contractor is Mr. P. M. Grayling.

A meeting, fairly representative of the dill'eivnt tradespeople in the town, was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday morning to decide as to the holidays to be nbserved during the. coming three weeks. Mr. Carter, the convener, presided. It was decided to close on Tuesday. Uth May, polling day, from noon, and to observe also the usual Thursday half-holiday in that week. Empire Day, -May 24, which falls on a Friday, will be observed as a whole holiday, and in (hat week the shops will remain open on Thursday. No holiday will bo kept on the Prince of Wales' Birthday, Monday, June 3, and the shops will close on Thursday in the ordinary way. It is hoped that the business people who were not present at the meeting will adopt the decision arrived at, and make the closing unanimous on (he days mentioned.
