THE EXHIBITION STILL ALIVE.
Tin' New Zealand Exhibition seems to have left a nasty taste in the mouth of various oversea exhibitors and visitors. It may be jealousy, of course, anil there may be reason for the nasty iaste. Mr irintyi'o's alleged defection is probably , not the only matter of the. kind that 1 will have to be seen into, and there are rumours that unbusinesslike, methods caused much trouble. The almost pardonable desire of the New Zetland authorities to make every penny possible out of the big show is seen in the fact that the Customs charged tln: South Australian CominissioiUT duty on tile wine he "shouted" to the people at the Exhibition. Ihe charging of distinguished commissioners and other notables entrance to be allowed to see their own courts seems niilier severe, but as it is now clear that this Exhibition was not. run in any spirit of philaniropby, ill would be an excellent idea to send letters of demand to oversea exhibitors telling them they forgot to tip the policeman or didn't subscribe lo the general manager's purse of sovereigns. Whatever has happened, nearly every Australian of note who was honoured by being admitted to the Exhibition at (he ordinary fee has gone back to his own country and severely criticised the Exhibition, tin- management, and all that therein is, or appertains. The main tiling to be remembered is thai no foreigner has got the better of us, a.nU that on the whole we have rather "taken' down" the foreigner. Ily means of the Kxbibiiion we have at least gained a reputation for siiiarti»Mi in attack and a knowledge of all lite points in ihe game of making Ihe most out of the stranger within the gates. The quarrel, for the position of (he Exhibition organ and other relics of lite Great Fair, impending suits in regard to amiable indiscretions on the •part of gentlemen in prominent positions, and Ihe writing up of another small ilem on the debit "side of the ledger are matters ,hat will make intere-ti.ng .Sunday reading for quite a while. In fact, the Exhibiiton is not dead vet.
