It is stated that rain was falling when the tow was shipped, which would enhance the liability of spontaneous combustion.
It took four hours to suppress the fire. The fort-hold contained 1200 bales of tow ami (lax. The lower portion of the hold was Hooded by pumping 300 tons of water, this rising to a depth of 12'/. feet iu the hold. When the fire was extinguished, pumping out began by the crew. When the vessel left at noon for Port Chalmers there was still eight feet of water below. The damage to the vessel is trilliug. Woodwork on the to]i deck was burned. A general average of 50 per cent, was collected on the cargo. The insurances on the cargo are unknown.
