IMPERIAL PREFERENCE.
Slit WILFRID LAURfER'S VIEWS. London, May 5. It wan a noticeable fact that Sir Wilfrid Laurier was the first at the Imperial Conference to recognise that preference was impossible. The impression is that he would bo quite willing to con- j sider what alternative (treat Britain was' prepared to offer iu the way of improving rapid communication and other assistance common to Imperial ends. The Economist says that Mr. Deakin failed (o indicate the advantage the Motherland would receive by adopting colonial preference. The Economist fails to sec how England would benefit by the expansion of the Australian export trade, if it were obtained by the passing of a self-denying ordinance against foreign goods, liefore making a definite oiler of preference Australia seems to lie waiting to learn what the Motherland is going to offer.
