THE GRASS FIRES.
EXTENSIVE DAMAGE ItKPOIITJiD. P'U- Pivss Association. Ashburton, January 20. During the week damage by grass lires has been reported from various parts of the country. The most serious was at Lauveston, on the ltakaia-Mothven line. The fire was fanned by a gale, and though hundreds of men were lighting it, it destroyed a thousand acres of pasture, miles «f fencing, nine stneks of oats, farm implements, a number of rams and many outbuildings. One man, in order to save himself, rushed into the middle of a pond. The heaviest sufferer is Walter Goodwin, who only recently occupied his fimn '_ : :£'Aa!i
