ROADS AND BRIDGES

SPEECH Jjy Mil. MeNAB. Per Press Association. Ekeluliunii, January 2(1. A new bridge across the Mangalai■noka river, near Hainua, was opened by the Hon. K. MeNab. Mr MeNab dwelt on the necessity for roads and bridge*, and said the death roll from drowning was greater than from epidemics. Bridges were too often forgotten by the Government of the day. lie commented on the new style of bridge invented by a contractor named Mr Dawson. If this proved satisfactory, it would do away with, the old style and, being about half the cost, the Department would be able to build double the number to the benefit of the country. He spoke of the need of watching the progress of other countries and applying their methods to Mew Zealand. He intended to do this, and with the prevention of the aggregation of estates they would build up a prosperous country. He advocated every opportunity being taken to open up the back country by good roads and bridges.
