THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

o .X INTERVIEW WITH THE I'UEMIER. Per Press Association. Auckland, January 27. On being interviewed on Saturday regarding to the new Council appoint, msnts, the Premier said there is bound, to jc criticism and difference of opinion upon the appointmont of Legislative Councillors, lint the question has to be looked at from tho colonial standpoint, and not from an entirely local ono. It was a most difficult mattor to settle on the allocations, and the appointments were arrived at only after a considerstion extending over some weeks. The Government did what appeared to be best for the colony as a whole. Telegramns he had had since the appoint. ments were made, show that on the whole thoy have been most favourably roseived. The Government had to givo consideration to the m.m who were already representing different interests, and that necessarily came into the calculation. There are a great number of good men in the country who would rnako excellent Legislative Councillors, but there is a limit to the number of appointments, and tho Government can only do what is fair and reasonable for the requirements of the country.
